Ten Great Widgets For Your Tumblr Blog

The thing many of us Tumblr users love about Tumblr is how it’s so customizable. With a little knowledge of how to navigate your Tumblr theme’s html, you can make your Tumblr blog look how you want it to look.

Below, I’ve gathered a wide range of 10 great widgets you can add to your Tumblr blog just by grabbing the widget’s code and pasting it into your Tumblr theme’s code. To get to your theme’s html, simply go to your Tumblr blog’s settings: Log into Tumblr, click your settings (the gear button on top of the screen) and click your blog’s title on the left. Next, click the customize button on the right and then the “edit HTML” button on the left. This is where the code is for your theme and where you’d paste the widget code.

Most of these widgets are normally placed in your theme’s sidebar, but you’re welcome to paste it wherever you want the widget to appear on your blog. If you want the widget to appear on your sidebar, just look for the sidebar section of your code and paste the widget code in there. Be sure to make a backup of your theme before doing this in case a mistake is made. You can make a backup by copying and pasting all of your theme’s code on to a text file and saving it to your hard drive.

For each widget listed below, just click the link next to their number and it’ll take you to the web page that will show you how to get the widget’s code.

On to the widgets, in no particular order:

1. Music Player Widget: For adding a song or a playlist to your blog.

2. Twitter Widget: This widget will display your tweets on your blog.

3. Hit Counter: This will let you know how many visitors your blog has received since adding the widget.

4. Clock Widget: A widget that will display a clock with the time of the city of your choice.

5. Flag Counter: When added to your Tumblr blog, this flag counter will add a new flags representing the countries of your visitors.

6. Followers Counter: This is a widget you can add to your Tumblr blog if you want to show how many followers you have.

7. Tumblr Cloud: Tumblr cloud is like a tag cloud for your Tumblr blog and will show the words you blog about the most.

8. Social Sharing Buttons: Adding this widget to your blog will add social sharing buttons which will allow your visitors to share your posts across a variety of social networks.

9. Polls: Polldaddy.com has widgets if you want to add polls to your blog.

10. Facebook Likes Widget: This widget will add a Facebook like widget to your blog. You’d need to have a Facebook page in order to use this widget.

How To Use The Tumblr App

If you have a smartphone, you can download the Tumblr app to access Tumblr from your smartphone. Below is a quick tutorial on how to use the Tumblr App. Please note that Tumblr does make fairly regular updates to their app, so this tutorial is how to operate the app as of the date this tutorial was written.

1. After you’ve downloaded the app on to your smartphone, click on it and you’ll get this log in screen.

2. Once you’ve logged in, the first screen you’ll see will be your dashboard.

3. To refresh your dashboard screen, you’d simply use your finger to drag the screen down and release. If there are any new posts, they will appear.

4. On the bottom of the posts on your Tumblr dashboard, you can like, reblog, or use the email/permalink button by clicking on the buttons. You can also click the notes button to see who has liked/reblogged the posts.

5. One other thing I’d like to talk about is the tool bar at the bottom of the screen. The first button on the tool bar is the dashboard button represented by the house symbol. The second button is the tags button that you’d click to do a Tumblr search. The third button is your account button which would show you your notifications, number of posts, followers, following, etc. When the lightning bolt is highlighted that means you have new notifications. The last button is what you’d select if you wanted to create a post.

6. Click on the second button and it’ll take you to the “searches” screen. When you select the search bar, it’ll show you all your tracked tags, but if you want to enter a new search, just enter a new search term and click the “search” button on the bottom of the screen.

7. Next, click on the third button. Like I mentioned above, when the account button’s lightning bolt is highlighted, it means you have new notifications like someone has reblogged or liked one of your posts or someone new has started to follow you.

The account screen has a lot of information about your account. At the top, are your notifications. You can click that and it’ll show a list of them and what was liked, reblogged and if someone followed you. Below that are your number of liked posts and the number of blogs you follow. At the bottom of the screen, you’ll see your blog and any secondary blogs you might have. When you click on the blog title, it’ll take you to another screen that will show you the number of followers you have, if you have any messages in your inbox, and if you have any posts in queue or draft.

At the very top of the account screen, you’ll see a gear button and this will take you to your settings where you can log out of the Tumblr app.

The final button on your Tumblr tool bar is your post making button. When you click on it, it’ll give you six options for making Tumblr posts. All are there except for audio posts. Hopefully, Tumblr will allow us to create audio posts from the app at some point. You can close out this by clicking the “x” at the bottom.

And that about sums it up. As I mentioned before, Tumblr may make some updates to the app and so far, I can say that each update has made the Tumblr app much easier and more user-friendly. I always like to access Tumblr whether I’m at my computer or away from it.

How To Customize Your Tumblr Theme

Tumblr gives us a lot of freedom when it comes to customizing our blogs and if you know some HTML, you can customize your blog to make it look exactly how you want it to look. Just go to your settings button on Tumblr, then click your blog title on the left. Next click the customize button on the right and finally, click the “edit HTML” button on the left. Once on the HTML page, you can do your edits right on the left side of the page. Tumblr users can either tweak a bit of code or go all out and create their own custom themes by scratch. This is one of the many things I love about Tumblr.

This post won’t be an HTML lesson or even a lesson on how to customize your sidebar or fonts, etc. mainly because every theme is different and if I were to give you detailed instructions on how to change it on my Tumblr theme, for example, the information might not apply to your theme. Hope that makes sense.

I’m no HTML or CSS expert, but I know enough to make tweaks and style changes to a Tumblr theme. Years ago, I taught myself some HTML/CSS by reading an older edition of this book, HTML5 & CSS3 Visual QuickStart Guide, and I still keep it in my reference files. If you’d like to do your own theme customization but don’t know a lick of HTML or CSS, I’d advise you to get an HTML book or do an internet search for some free online tutorials. It’s not necessary to become fluent in code, but if you want control over how you want your blog to look down to the tiny details, it would be helpful to learn some HTML and CSS.

*Important* Before making any changes to your Tumblr theme, please make a backup of your current theme by copying and pasting all of the code on to a text file. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard about people pasting a new theme’s code into the HTML box when it still had some old code in it. Then they wonder why their theme isn’t working.

The basics for creating a custom Tumblr theme are in this link provided by Tumblr. It gives you the basic structure of a theme along with the HTML, CSS (the styles that are applied to the HTML) and the codes that are specific to Tumblr (like {title} and {description} for example). Once you know some HTML, the information in that link will make more sense.

Another way to customize Tumblr theme is to hunt down your ideal theme. You may not be able to find your absolute perfect theme but you can go to a search engine and type what you’re looking for. On a recent hunt, I found some really nice and free Tumblr themes. Check some of those out; maybe you’ll find what you’re looking for.

Other than learning HTML or doing an internet search for a Tumblr theme, you can ask theme designers if they’d be able to make you a custom theme. Just do a search for Tumblr theme designers and see what you can find. I’ve never requested a custom designed theme myself, but I wouldn’t be surprised if there are some designers out there who’d design a theme for you. Who knows; give it a shot.

5 Areas Where Pinterest Could Improve

Let me preface this blog post by saying I love Pinterest; it is a ton of fun and highly addicting, but it could use some work in some important areas.

In no particular order:

1. Pinterest’s Search Results

Pinterest seems to take a while to update their search results. After creating a pin with a proper description, hashtags, etc., it won’t be found in search when you do a search for the tag immediately after creating it. Maybe pins need to be indexed similarly to the way blog posts need to be indexed before a search engine will make them visible to the public. I don’t know for sure, but I’ve seen plenty of people complaining about how their pins aren’t appearing on Pinterest right away or at all. Another possibility for this issue is Pinterest takes a while to trust new pinners before they allow their pins to be unleashed upon the Pinterest community. I know Tumblr has a bit of a wait period before posts made by new users appear on tag pages, but Tumblr’s wait period isn’t nearly as long as Pinterest’s.

2. Pin Scheduling

I would love it if Pinterest had some built in tool that would allow us to schedule our pins and repins. Tumblr has a queue which gives its users the ability to schedule their posts and reblogs and it’s free to use. Twitter and Facebook have free tools like Hootsuite and Tweetdeck, among others that are great for scheduling tweets and posts. Where’s Pinterest’s free scheduling tool? I’ve heard of Pingraphy, but it doesn’t appear to be free.

I don’t know about you, but seeing my Pinterest home page covered with pins from one pinner can get overwhelming. If these pinners had a way to schedule their pins, they would be much less annoying, or at least, one would hope.

3. Finding Group Boards

Once upon a time, Pinterest had a nice little spot where you could find their group boards with this link right here: http://pinterest.com/groupboards/, but if you click this link right now, you’ll see there’s nothing there anymore. At least that’s how it is at the time of the writing of this blog post. Group boards are a great way to collaborate with other pinners to build a board that focuses on a particular topic.

It used to be easy to find group boards by using the link I posted above, but now, I have no idea how to find them. Sure, I can type in the words group board in Pinterest’s search field, but that would only return group boards that have the words “group board” in their title and not all group boards are going to have those words in their title. If one of you knows how to find group boards, please let me know. Hopefully, Pinterest will make finding group boards easy again and that link I posted will go back to its original usefulness.

4. Too Little Social Interaction

I know you can post comments on pins and invite pinners to join group boards, but that’s about the extent of how much communication that’s done on Pinterest that I know of. It doesn’t appear that many people comment on pins either. Sure you can follow pinners and boards too, but that alone doesn’t make for a social networking community. It would be great if there were a way to send pinners private messages or even a way for pinners to have a conversation, but there isn’t; at least I have yet to see this on Pinterest.

5. The Help Desk

I’m not going to go on a rant here, but Pinterest’s help desk seems to be understaffed. If someone told me they only had four or five people handling the hundreds or thousands of emails they probably get per day, I would not be surprised. I remember when I first joined, I asked what I thought would be an easy question for them, but I didn’t get a response until a week or so later. It was just a question about pin board categories, but my guess is they’re swamped over there and it is understandable for a company that is as new as they are.

Honorable Mention

I didn’t add this to my official list because I hadn’t thought about this as an issue until I read this blog post recently. I remember when I first joined Pinterest how I had to follow pinners and boards, but on other social networks, forced following doesn’t exist. Pinners who already have a ton of followers are reaping the rewards of this system; even ones who haven’t been active for months (not naming names) are raking in the followers.

I’ll admit this issue doesn’t bother me as much as the other issues I mentioned, but that’s only because I haven’t thought about it nearly as long since I just recently discovered that blog post. I’ll try not to think about it too much for the sake of positivity (too late, I know, ha!).

So, there’s my list. Hopefully, Pinterest is just experiencing some growing pains and will make improvements along the way, so I’ll cut them some slack for now.

Best Facebook Marketing To Keep Visitor Interest Alive

When marketing on Facebook, you have a lot of competition from internet marketers, companies promoting their brands and individuals too. That is a lot of noise to try to rise above with a daily stream of posts, shares, likes and so forth. So you need an edge to help attract visitors, Facebook friends, new shares and to keep visitors engaged.

Use Photos

Photos with some carefully crafted content can encourage interaction with friends. This can be useful for companies that wish to spark interest in new products or new flavors to existing products, like products being released with new colors, designs or accessories.

Some companies such as Home Depot use their Facebook page to post photos and then ask visitors to guess the product. Others have online quizzes and contests with prizes. This can be a very inexpensive form of marketing for these companies, help keep the brand and products in the mind of the consumer, and increase overall sales.

Make Fun of Yourself

People enjoy self depreciating humor. Especially from businesses that can often be seen to be tight lipped or lacking a funny bone. It can add a human factor, reminding people that companies are ultimately comprised of people just like them.

There is a reason why movie lovers enjoy seeing blopper reels on DVD and BluRay movie extras. We don’t always want to see the final take that went perfectly. It is often more fun to see our favorite actors flub their lines and show a human side when they react honestly to their mistake. Companies that can appreciate this reality do well to show themselves in a humorous light.

However, it is important to know what businesses it would be inappropriate to show this side, such as a security-related business, where customers may not be quite so amused.

Promote a Cause

Customers frequently get behind businesses that themselves get behind a charitable cause. Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream was very popular because of its stated goal to donate a percentage of the profits to charitable causes.

Companies can get equal marketing traction while promoting a good cause by offering to donate funds to a popular charity in exchange for the best tweet or the best post or the most interesting idea or best customer service story from their customers.

Get Your Customers Talking

Social Media is often at its best by getting customers talking, being engaged and freely contributing to an open discussion with fellow customers. This is an excellent way to turn busy people from happy consumers to raving fans of the brand. This, in turn, can help to pull in new customers from word of mouth. And this type of promotion is said to be about the best kind that money cannot buy. Companies may not be able to buy word of mouth advertising, but they can certainly encourage it.

The Whys And Hows Of Maintaining A Good Credit Rating

Credit rating has the same, if not greater, degree of significance as do other aspects related to credit cards. For each time you use your card, it is noted by the provider. This enables them to sent accurate statements but is also used to create a picture of your payments over a period of time and if you have exceeded your limit. This information is circulated to the credit bureaus and your credit rating is decided. The rating is adjusted when necessary on a regular basis. Other credit providers can access this information and so can you.

Why is a credit rating important? How do companies use the information in the credit rating?

Those institutions that supply credit rely upon credit ratings to determine whether a person is deserving of credit. This is the first thing that any of these institutions will look at when you apply for a mortgage or credit card or car loan. People with good credit ratings will have no problems obtaining credit, but a bad credit rating may mean that your application is declined or you may be hit with higher interest rates, receive less than what you had applied for or very restrictive terms and conditions. A bad credit rating may prevent you from obtaining more credit cards or restrict you to a debit card. This basically means that you can only use the money you have in your account, or sometimes you will only be allowed to access 70 – 80 % of the amount.

You credit rating can even influence a potential employer. Some organizations will examine potential employees’ credit ratings to get an idea if you are a responsible person or not. And you thought it was just about getting a loan!

Obtaining and maintaining a good credit rating is not that hard – you just need to be firm with yourself and make sure that the bills are paid on time.

It is all too easy to get into the mindset of “credit card = free money”, when it is obviously just borrowed money. If you want to change this, you have to resist the temptation to use your credit card for “impulse” purchases. Use cash whenever you can and reduce the number of times you pull out the little plastic card. Ignore “last time” or “special” offers that encourage the use of the card. This clever little marketing tactic draws in naive people – “last time” is rarely actually the last time this sort of offer is made.

Try to keep the amount you have used of your credit limit to below 70 – 80%. Bad credit ratings often result from repeated “over the limit” spending.

Make sure that you pay your bills on time. Unpaid bills can lead to further charges and increased interest payments and it will also ruin your credit rating. Keep track of the due dates for your accounts and check with the provider if a statement does not arrive one month. Keep a record of these dates in your diary and ensure that each account is paid on or before the date it is due. People who have a regular income may find the convenience of direct debit is useful – the bill gets paid automatically, taking the stress away from you.

Social Marketing For Small Businesses

At the very top right of the page your blog is on, insert a “like box” for Facebook. This permits website visitors to “like” you on your Facebook custom fanpage. Having this directly on your website permits your online visitors to “like” you without the need to leave your page. Making it this simple can make it more likely that people will do so, plus it provides you with more exposure.

If you are using social media as part of your online marketing strategy, make sure you answer people the moment they make a remark or ask you a question. You can easily miss out on a message or a comment, thus each time you sign in to your site, ensure you watch out for these feedback.

When using social media marketing, you might want to adjust and refresh your objective and goals on a regular basis, as a way to stay on target. The interactions might take your marketing and advertising down unexpected paths, therefore it is better to re-evaluate the course it’s going habitually and adjust accordingly.

Devise plans prior to attacking social media networking for business. Ascertain who is going to deal with the web pages, what type of design you desire, and exactly how many hours you would want to invest into it. Just as with any other advertising campaign, have a fixed timeline to attain your desired goals. Hold on to your system as strongly as possible, and you will definitely find success in social media marketing.

Whenever using social media to offer your business or product, be sure you create a title that may bring people in. A boring title will likely make readers skip over your write-up, therefore, your marketing efforts will be for nothing. In addition, ensure your title is relevant to your internet business or the merchandise that you’re advertising.

If you are considering social media marketing, the very first thing you should do is sign-up with as much social media websites as you can with your chosen account names. These account names should include your organization name. This is primarily essential for websites just like Twitter where your account name is your displayed name. In the future, it may become more and more difficult for you to have the account name that you like. Save those names today.

Make the effort to follow your customers and contact them away from social media. If your customers have a blog and they are posting about your organization, engage with them and socialize on their blog. Link to their content on your social media pages and this will entice more and more people to follow you from the bloggers fan base.

Take it easy, it is simply an internet based discussion. Email used to frighten the pants off of businesses who did not understand the good, the bad, and the ugly of the whole thing. Now it’s the go-to communication channel. Social network media is the brand new channel, and all you should do is take a moment and talk to your customers. It’s what they really want and exactly what you need.

Always keep a humble frame of mind in your social media posts. No matter what the size of your business, if your posts appear as arrogant or boastful, your followers will let you know. You are never more powerful than your followers as well as your customers. They are the cornerstone to your success.

Professional Email Tips Refined Email Advertising

Everyday Web users obtain tons of emails telling them to buy certain merchandise or go to explicit websites. While these emails arrive in the inboxes of unsuspecting Web customers each day, most of them pay very little consideration to these emails. That’s as a result of emails which are blatant commercials are often considered as spam. Most Internet users have little or no tolerance for spam. Reactions to spam are likely to range from simply ignoring the emails and having the email addresses blocked from sending future emails to reporting the emails to their Web service provider for additional investigation. We understand many Internet entrepreneurs have issue protecting their e mail advertising subtle. Due to this fact this text will present some useful data on how professional email might be kept subtle so it isn’t viewed as spam.

Some of the necessary standards for making certain your e-mail advertising is delicate and will not be considered as spam is to provide something of quality to the recipients. This may increasingly embrace insightful articles, attention-grabbing quizzes or other useful information which members of the audience are likely to discover useful. When e-mail recipients understand an e-mail they received is providing them one thing worthwhile comparable to knowledge or details about a particular area of interest subject they’re much more likely to spend some time reviewing the e-mail as a result of they will not take into account the email to be spam. In addition to utilizing the creation of this copy to persuade recipients that the email is just not spam, the business owners may also reap the benefits of this copy by providing subtle advertising. This will embody product references in the articles or links to your web site throughout the email.

Avoiding language which makes outrageous claims may also help to maintain advertising fairly subtle. Utilizing superlatives and describing the greatness of specific merchandise is likely to be seen as blatant advertising. When this happens, it’s not likely that website house owners will believe there’s validity in anything contained inside the email as a result of they will consider your complete e mail is solely one massive advertisement in your merchandise or services.

Another strategy to preserve promoting refined when running an e mail advertising and marketing marketing campaign is to only ship your electronic mail to those who are more likely to be extremely interested by your products and services. That is vital because when email recipients receive an email which does not replicate their pursuits at all, they are not likely to take the e-mail severe and may view the e-mail as a blatant advertisement. Nonetheless, when the e-mail is simply despatched to those that share a standard curiosity the e-mail seems extra personalized. On this case the e-mail recipients will not be likely to view each product reference as a blatant commercial because they perceive there is sometimes a necessity to mention merchandise or services.

Lastly e mail advertising and marketing remains delicate when the content of the e-mail is written as if it isn’t coming immediately from the enterprise owner. The copy might communicate concerning the products and services as though they are being supplied by a 3rd party. This make the promoting seem extra subtle because it doesn’t appear to return directly from the business owner.

Lastly, business owners can help to make sure their email advertising and marketing efforts aren’t considered as blatant commercials by holding reference to your individual website to an absolute minimum. Most Web users usually view hyperlinks from one website to a different strictly as an advertisement. For that reason it could be worthwhile for enterprise owners who are marketing an email campaign to maintain links to a minimal and to fastidiously weave these hyperlinks into even the most fairly benign copy. The links must be offered as if they have been only included to give you a chance to learn extra in regards to the products and not as a way to encourage you to purchase these products. It may be worthwhile to contemplate hiring a writer with one of these expertise to ensure the copy conveys the desired message and has the specified impact on the email recipients.

Big Button Cordless Phones

Firstly I need to confess I need to put on reading glasses so as soon as I discovered a big button cordless phone, it was just right for me. No further fumbling with the glasses simply in order to make a telephone call. That got me to thinking…. when big button cordless phones seem to be so common then why are cellular phones running the opposite direction? A guess could be the the size if what may be selling them to the masses and therefore not the convenience.

When you want a cordless big button phone, you should look at acquiring one using a big screen too. That means you’ll be able to see any numbers being dialed comfortably. Okay, I confess that I often screen our calls and looking at the screen let me know when I needed to answer or not. But now I discovered a big button cordless phone which really announces any callers phone number. Talk about ease, it is fantastic. No need to actually get up from my easy chair, simply wait until the voice through the cordless announces the telephone number. For my situation, many telemarketers numbers come up as “out of area” or “toll free call”. I essentially ignore most phone calls from those people.

An additional terrific option can be having a answering machine built in. To get the most ease, anyone ought to think about a cordless phone with answering machine built in. An individual system to help carry out two purposes. An additional consideration can be multiple handsets. The units utilize an individual ‘base station’ unit. All the added phones become satellites from that unit. Nearly all manufactures allow you to add multiple phones consequently you don’t need to spend a lot of money up front. Naturally, like many other points, the pricing per unit is often a LOT less costly if you buy the multiple unit system in the beginning. The lone trouble I have encountered making use of the multiple unit systems is usually that following a power outage, you’ve got to place all of the satellite units back into the base unit for it to ‘re- synchronize”. Should your area has a lot of power failures(just like mine) this will be a bit of a pain. After saying that, allow me state that the ease of multiple units nevertheless far outweighs the occasional inconvenience of having to re- synch the units.

You will discover number of manufacturers on the market manufacturing big button cordless phones. Perhaps the hottest brands are:

  • Panasonic
  • Vtech
  • GE
  • Dect

There are actually bluetooth cordless phones available. These allow you to answer your house phone thru your mobile phone(assuming the cellphone is Bluetooth capable.
